Strengthening Rural to Urban Linkages with ICT Platforms across Africa
THEME: Scaling Technology and Innovation for Agriculture
DATE: Monday, March 27
TIME: 1:00 PM
LOCATION: Ballroom 2
This session will focus on the nuts and bolts of using ICT platforms to link farmers and consumers, highlight three cases where organizations have introduced fee-based IT services into the agricultural sector and will explain their role as “connective tissue” to improve rural production and to connect rural producers with urban markets. In Senegal, the USAID Naatal Mbay project has used mobile value chain applications to enable lead farmers to collect data on individual producers, farming practices, and quality control. In Ghana, Esoko has implemented its m-commerce solution to increase financial services while improving access and availability of agricultural inputs. Participants will learn about specific innovative features employed by ICT platforms, gaining relevant insight into payment mechanisms for local users, tracking agricultural data, and using ICT platforms to overcome language barriers and limited internet access.
