Transforming the Rice Supply Chain in Senegal
THEME: Improving Sustainability and Food Security in Urban Markets
DATE: Tuesday, March 28
TIME: 2:45 PM
LOCATION: Ballroom 1
Senegal has emerged as a leader in private sector-driven agricultural development, thanks to a combination of prudent government policies, a growing private sector, targeted donor interventions, and relative economic, political and social stability. From this session, participants will learn about the factors behind the successful transformation of the rice supply chain in Senegal, which is today rolling back the once-dominant imports from Asia. This has included production improvements, increased access to finance, and reduction of risk associated with both irrigated and rain-fed rice, as well as a targeted promotional campaign to improve processing and distribution networks. Participants will leave the session with an appreciation of the elements involved in addressing urban demand through the transformation of local food systems, and how these elements can be replicated.
