Engaging Markets in Different Contexts of Urbanization: Asia and Africa
THEME: Facilitating Links from Rural to Urban Parts of a Supply Chain
DATE: Tuesday, March 28
TIME: 10:15 AM
LOCATION: Ballroom 3
Engaging with urban markets in countries and areas at different phases of urbanization, from Africa to East Asia, can be difficult to implement with a broad stroke. The three major axes discussed in this session are information, market organization, and multi-faceted partnerships. Such partnership focus on private sector engagement throughout the market spectrum, and how to create or reinforce relationships between agricultural producers, their input suppliers, and their buyers. Using the examples of Uganda, Indonesia and China, representatives of Mercy Corps and partner organizations will form a panel to discuss differences in engaging in urban markets, how these markets impact the smallholders, and thus how programming needs to be adjusted by country and context. The session will also consider how to engage with different minority groups to build trust and ensure inclusivity of both vulnerable groups and women.
